ADONIS, the pen name of Ali Ahmad Said (b. 1930), is a Syrian poet, essayist and translator.  Imprisoned in Syria in the mid-1950s as a result of his political beliefs and activities, Adonis settled abroad and has made his career largely in Lebanon and France.  He is a perennial contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
